CEOtaku 2023 Review

In September 2023, the BN’K on Tour Team took to our very first fighting game convention. Our amazing lead photographer took the lead on this endeavor as they are super locked into the local FGC (Fighting Game Community)  here in Orlando. With his excitement and the team’s eagerness, we embarked on what would be one of the most fun, comfortable, and truly exciting convention experiences we’ve had in the Central, Florida area.
CEOtaku is an anime fighting game convention like no other, and I can't express enough how much we adored this event. This convention is a mecca for anime fighting game enthusiasts and competitors alike, and it absolutely delivered an extraordinary experience this year. If you're into the thrilling world of anime fighting games, CEOtaku is the place to be.

Honest Critiques and Suggestions

We here at BN'K on Tour value transparency, so we do have a few critiques about the event. However, to be totally honest these critiques aren't detractors from the event, just places of opportunity for the event to improve.

We would be interested in a few more activities for attendees to participate in, in addition to the open arcade and tournaments. Now it’s not lost on us that this is a fighting game tournament, but the equally entertaining, non-gaming events that took place like Karaoke were a treat to participate in. We think maybe a dance party panel or an ARG (alternate reality game) would’ve been a nice touch for folks who were looking to mingle a bit or ‘to touch grass’.

Nobody’s doing Anime FG Tournaments like CEOtaku

A cool aspect of CEOtaku is the incredible atmosphere. From the moment you step through the doors, you're surrounded by an incredibly welcoming community, which is kind of jarring if your only exposure to the FGC (fighting game community) is online. Everyone we encountered was very kind, had an incredibly sweet disposition, and genuinely wanted to connect with you.

As for the layout of CEOtaku, it was fairly easy to navigate, with clear signage and well-organized areas. The team is very familiar with the Wyndham Hotel, however for newcomers, we still think it would be rather difficult to get lost or confused about where to go next as the maps were clear to read and everything was signed appropriately. It's a well-thought-out layout that makes your overall experience easy to enjoy, ensuring that you can focus on what matters most: the games and the people. One of the things that truly sets CEOtaku apart is their commitment to safety. The convention goes the extra mile by staffing its own security, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. It felt like CEOtaku really understands the importance of the little things that make an event memorable.

The open arcade at CEOtaku is a real gem. It's a paradise for gamers with a fantastic mix of both interesting and nostalgic games. It's a great place to unwind and connect with attendees. A few of the highlights of CEOtaku were the featured arcade cabinets of Jai-lai Heros: Throwback, which was a major draw for attendees, offering a unique gaming experience that especially warmed the team's heart as it was heavily inspired by Florida and the 80s era aesthetic. Additionally, the maid cafe hosted by Cafe Peko Peko was a real treat offering a cute, exciting, and lovingly chaotic experience overall.

CEOtaku puts on absolutely unforgettable and entertaining matches commented on by equally entertaining commentators. We were practically on the edge of our seats watching the battles unfold. The enthusiastic commentators really make you feel like you're part of the matches; we felt like we were in a stadium with all the energy that was in the room!

What about Cost and Accommodations?

CEOtaku is actually a very affordable convention, offering only two badge types: The Spectator badge at  $60 for the weekend and The Standard badge at $85 for the weekend. With the Spectator Badge attendees get 24-hour access starting Friday night to the Artist Alley, Vendors, and the full arcade, and Standard badges get Spectator access and the ability to register for tournaments starting at $10 a game. There also was the option for $30 daily wristbands if you only wanted to stop in for the day. But all in all, these prices are perfect for the kind of event CEOtaku is.

As far as hotel accommodations, CEOtaku takes place in the Wyndham Orlando Resort where rooms start at $139 a night. However, this booking information can change depending on when you decide to solidify lodging for your stay at the event. There aren’t a ton of other hotels in the immediate area to stay alternatively, but honestly, that may be for the best Wyndham is going to provide the overall closest and most comfortable stay in the area.

If you’re looking for food, you’ll be happy to know there is a smorgasbord of dining options within comfortable walking distance of the host hotel at various and affordable price points. This also includes places to have a yummy cocktail for all of my 21 and up convention attendees. Parking is convenient if not a bit crowded as it shares a plaza with few other tourist shopping areas, but for those staying at the host hotel, you’ll have some guaranteed parking to look forward to, however, I'd note that parking does cost if you stay at the host hotel.

Overall, accommodation for CEOtaku is very reasonable comparable to other conventions within the Orlando, Florida area specifically.

Should You go to CEOtaku?

CEOtaku is a must-attend event for any fan of anime-fighting games or even those mildly interested in the hobby. With its welcoming atmosphere, easy navigation, attention to detail, open arcade, and lively tournaments, it's an anime-fighting game paradise that will leave you with cherished memories and a desire to return year after year. CEOtaku isn't just a convention; it's a family of passionate gamers coming together to celebrate their shared love for these incredible games.

A New Event Has Arrived and They're Bringing the Heat! Central Florida Face-Off 2024

E-sports have always been popular in the nerd space, but in Central Florida, we have access to some of the best e-sports hubs around. From CEO Gaming and CEOtaku, hosted annually, as well as other smaller gaming groups and gatherings, this area is perfect for members of the fighting game community (FGC) and other esports participants. So it was no surprise when a new esports event called Central Florida Face-Off (CFFO) was announced that folks in the area were stoked to attend.  Central Florida Face-Off was a one-day event hosted at the Avanti Palms Resort in Orlando, Florida, in the popular tourist area, International Drive. According to the creative team behind the event, CFFO is  “A daring experiment in combining the communities of fighting games and trading card games, showing off the power of competition to bring people together” .   The hotel was rather spacious with plenty of space for gamers and other nerdy enthusiast to enjoy their time at the event. Orlando's First Decora Meet & Swap

Orlando, Florida, is home to some of the coolest things in the world. From Disney World and Universal Studios to the world's largest Checkers and now even the world's largest HMart, Orlando is certainly one of the coolest tourist destinations. However, could it also be the world's next fashion destination? That's the question I asked myself as I attended the area's first-ever Decora Meet & Swap. Hosted by the delightfully colorful Glo ( Glopop.exe ) and her friends, Cayla Joy and Winter Kero , in collaboration with the supremely talented folks of Goblin Market, an organization known for its creative art markets and events, their brilliant minds worked together to bring forth Orlando's first-ever decora fashion meet-up event. The event was filled with color, joy, and activities for enthusiasts and decora fashionistas alike, with the spectacular Cybr.grl as the special guest of the event. After attending, I was brimming with giddiness I haven't been abl...
